Job description
The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Geneva benefits from an enriching multicultural dynamic to which it contributes through its influence within the framework of the mandates it has given itself: teaching, research and its partnership with the University Hospitals of Geneva (HUG).
As part of a research project on vaccination coverage in conflict-affected areas of Ethiopia and Somalia and epidemiological modelling on the risk factors for cholera and Mpox in Africa, the Geneva Centre for Humanitarian Studies and the HUG are looking for a
Scientific collaborator 2 at 100%
specialized in the field of medicine in humanitarian crises and in the management of clinical teams. Under the responsibility of a researcher from the Centre, he/she will contribute to several objectives:
- Development of the teaching program in the management of complex courses
- Coordination of the management program’s teaching
- Leading public health studies in humanitarian crises
- Teaching about public health and scientific methods
The tasks of our future scientific collaborator:
Research:
- Conduct a literature review and theoretical modelling of methods for estimating immunization coverage adapted to humanitarian contexts
- Evaluate routine polio immunization data systems in high-risk areas (RISP) and make recommendations for improvement
- Leading a modelling study on risk factors for severe cholera outbreaks in Africa
- Support fieldwork and conduct an epidemiological analysis on Mpox risk factors in the DRC
- Writing and publishing scientific manuscripts
- Develop and submit funding proposals to donors
- Further development of the individual research portfolio
- Building and strengthening research partnerships
- Contribute to other research projects (depending on the time available)
Teaching:
- Support course preparation and teach in the Health Emergencies in Large Populations (H.E.L.P.) course
- Contribute to the development of a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on humanitarian health
- Supervise at least 1 Master/Diploma of Advanced Studies (MAS/DAS) thesis in Humanitarian Action (continuing education)
- To give occasional lessons to MAS/DAS students, as needed
Other:
- Participation in team activities (meetings, reports, etc.)
Required designation and qualifications
- PhD in Public Health
- Training in epidemiology
- Training and experience in modelling for vaccination and infectious disease programs
- Strong data analysis skills
- Experience working in low-income countries
- Proven ability to write articles of a quality commensurate with publication in high-level journals
Additional requirements:
- Excellent command of English (oral and written)
- Knowledge of French (oral and written)
- Proven ability to work collaboratively as part of a team
- Ability to work independently under strict deadlines, including planning, managing, and conducting independent research
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to work with non-academic partners
- Awareness of the risks and ethical implications of conducting fieldwork
- Willing to travel
