Dr Fleur Hierink

Fleur Hierink is a geospatial health expert who works as a lecturer and researcher in the GeoHealth group at the University of Geneva. She focuses on using geospatial models to assess healthcare access and disease distribution, aiming to improve health service delivery through geospatial data. She also co-coordinates the PhD program in Global Health and teaches the course GeoHealth – Geospatial Approaches for the MSc. in Global Health.

Fleur holds a bachelor’s degree in Health- and Life Sciences from VU Amsterdam. She completed her MSc. in Biomedical Sciences, specializing in Toxicology and Environmental Health, at Utrecht University in 2018. In June 2022, she earned her PhD in the GeoHealth group at the University of Geneva under the supervision of Prof. Nicolas Ray, where her research centered on the effects of geographical accessibility on healthcare in low- and middle-income countries.

Over the course of her career, Fleur has worked on projects with UNFPA, UNICEF, and WHO to support the optimisation of emergency obstetric and newborn care networks (EmONC), the development of primary care roadmaps, and assess the impact of conflict or crisis situations on healthcare access. She has also conducted workshops on the use of GIS and AccessMod in several Sub-Saharan African countries.

Fleur joined the Centre of Humanitarian studies in October 2024, where she is collaborating on a project focused on methods to estimate vaccination coverage in conflict affected settings. She is also involved in several teaching activities namely in supporting the HELP course.
